The Board of Directors of the King Salman Park Foundation announced the completion of construction work on the Al-Orouba Road Tunnel, one of the main arteries in the capital, Riyadh. This project is part of the Foundation's ongoing effort to develop and oversee a number of other projects as the foundation responsible for designing, planning, implementing, managing, operating, developing, and maintaining the park.
An opening ceremony for the western route of the tunnel was held in the presence of H.E. Eng. Ibrahim bin Mohammad Al-Sultan, Royal Commission for Riyadh City acting CEO, H.E. Lieutenant-General Mohammad bin Abdullah Al-Bassami the Director of Public Security, Eng. Ahmed bin Mutair Al-Balawi, the Undersecretary for Operation and Maintenance of Riyadh Region Municipality, and George Tanasijevich, CEO of King Salman Park Foundation. Starting Sunday, x/7/2024, vehicles will be able to cross the tunnel through its eastern route.
Al-Orouba Tunnel, which spans 2150 meters in length, is located in the northern part of King Salman Park. It intersects with Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq Road, which houses one of the longest tunnels in the Middle East, opened in the first quarter of this year as part of the King Salman Park Foundation’s efforts to develop one of the largest urban parks in the world. This project is one of Riyadh’s mega projects launched by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud on 19/3/2019, under the diligent follow-up of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of King Salman Park Foundation.
As part of the King Salman Park bridges and tunnels project, existing tunnels will be linked with new ones in order to enhance connectivity throughout the park. Tunnels beneath the park will provide visitors with seamless experiences, since they will isolate traffic, minimize pollution and noise leakages, and increase total green areas within the project. They will also facilitate smooth traffic flow, with the Al-Orouba Tunnel capable of accommodating 140,000 vehicles per hour during peak hours. It features three vehicle lanes and an additional emergency lane in each direction, along with five emergency exits. For ensuring efficient performance, the tunnels are equipped with advanced security and safety systems, gas monitoring systems, integrated fire suppression systems, and traffic management systems available in Riyadh as the city's infrastructure evolves.
The tunnel has a variety of color gradations in its architectural style, which simulate earth layers and Riyadh’s rock formations. Inspired by Salmani architecture, it is adorned with vibrant colors that capture the spirit of King Salman Park and its iconic landmarks. It integrates nature, culture, the arts, entertainment, sports and business. Additionally, the park will include a range of commercial centers, residential areas, and hospitality venues, making it a prime investment zone and a desirable destination for residents and tourists alike.
