Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, January 23, 2022:
The King Salman Park Foundation announced today the commencement of construction of the park’s Visitor Pavilion. The construction contract was awarded to a national company.
Spanning 90,000m², the unique public space will include a plant nursery, a multi-use hall, meeting rooms, exhibition areas, restaurants, and cafes. Suitable for events, entertainment shows and business meetings, the main auditorium will seat up to 230 guests with VIP and tiered seating. The Pavilion will also house interactive garden exhibits that introduce the park’s natural, cultural, and recreational elements as well as a generous terrace designed to command 360-degree views overlooking the lush, green landscape.
The design concept for the King Salman Park Visitor Pavilion is based on the principles of “Salmani architecture”, honoring the beauty of traditional materials while interpreting them through modern design and construction. With a focus on sustainability and the environment, the design maximizes the use of natural light during seasonal variations.
British architect David Adjaye’s design of King Salman Park’s Visitor Pavilion blurred the boundaries between the exterior spaces of the park and the interior rooms of the Pavilion, and in doing so maximizes the use of natural light. Adjaye was knighted in 2017 by Queen Elizabeth II and won the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture by RIBA in September 2021.
The Visitor Pavilion is the latest of many construction projects that have broken ground at King Salman Park. The King Salman Park Foundation has recently awarded contracts worth SR3.847 billion to a group of national companies to implement parts of the King Salman Park project. These contracts include site preparation works, the construction of several tunnels and bridges in addition to infrastructure and preparation works in the Royal Arts Complex. The foundation has also signed an agreement with the Saudi Electricity Company to establish 5 power stations to supply the park with energy at a total capacity of 580 megawatts.
The Park will deliver a holistic experience that provides a variety of environmental, cultural, sports, artistic, and entertainment options to improve the quality of life in the city, supporting the realization of Vision 2030, led by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, to create a vibrant and healthy society and boost the global ranking of Riyadh amongst the “world's top liveable cities”.
King Salman Park covers more than 16km² and is characterized by its strategic location in the city of Riyadh, linked to several main roads, as well as the Public Transport Project that includes Riyadh’s train and bus network, making it easily accessible for residents and visitors in Riyadh.
